Having defeated the Frenchman 6-2 in the opening set of the men’s tennis tournament, Tsitsipas appeared to be on his way to the 2021 French Open final.

But the 23-year-old was resilient, having practised a similar comeback against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round before his match with the Greek.

The second set went the distance on serve, but in the tie-break, the Frenchman took control, racing out to a 6-3 lead before serving out the match.

Then, on set point, Tsitsipas collapsed to the court, clutching his leg in anguish, prompting the Greek to need medical attention before the third set.

It was a back-and-forth battle between deuce and advantage until Humbert finally broke Tsitsipas and won the match. Tsitsipas, the number one seed in the tournament, was eliminated when the number 14 seed won two consecutive games.

ROC’s Karen Khachanov is the next player in line to confront Humbert.

Tsitsipas won’t have much time to stew, since he and Maria Sakkari, his mixed doubles partner, will be back on the court later today for the start of their match. In the opening round, they will face Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski.

Undoubtedly, the off-play hiccup appeared to put Tsitsipas off guard even as the set eventually began. As the Greek battled in the set, he became disinterested in the match.

Ugo saw his rival wasn’t paying attention and immediately asserted his superiority by attacking him. Eventually, the action gravitated to one half of the court as the heated competition continued.
