There were cliches for every team at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, but the Czech Republic’s were among the most interesting.

With a veteran roster that has been playing together for years and a star player who is something of a hero in his home country.

And whose biggest childhood dream was not to play in the NBA but to represent his country on the world stage, this national team has all the makings of an Olympic contender.

The Czechs became fan favourites due to their game’s high level of drama, which included multiple late-game comebacks.

Agame-winning bank shot in overtime, and a pre-game beer sound bite that went viral online.

All of these themes came together on July 4 as the Czech Republic defeated Greece in the tournament finals to win the OQT and qualify for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

    T. Satoranský, captain of the team and TISSOT tournament most valuable player, said, “Today, we made the dream come true for our national team.”

    T. Satoranský joined the national team in 2012 and played in 49 games for the red, white, and blue before qualifying for the Olympics.

On the court, he showed flashes of brilliance in Victoria, including 19 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds in a nail-biting victory over Urugua.

And a bank shot that gave the Czechs the lead with 1.8 seconds left in overtime of their sensational Semi-Final victory against Canada, the tournament favourites.
