Mexico upset the hosts Japan 3-1 in the bronze medal game at Saitama Stadium, despite a late rally by the Japanese.

El Tri has finished in the medals twice in the last three tournaments thanks to goals from S. Cordova, Johan Vasquez, and Alexis Vega, who gave the Samurai Blue a mountain to climb despite Kaoru Mitoma’s late counterattack.

As for the men’s tournament, Japan’s drought for a medal will extend into the next Olympiad.

Who won the Bronze Medal Game, and Why?

In the first half, Mexico took the lead when S. Cordova scored on a penalty, and the America star later assisted on Vasquez’s goal by taking a free kick.

Just before the hour mark, Vega added a third to keep El Tri on track for third place in the tournament.

With 15 minutes remaining, Mitoma gave Japan a glimmer of hope, but it wasn’t enough to save a loss, and the home team was defeated 0-1.

After the disappointment of Rio, El Tri is back on track and ready to win medals.

After winning the gold medal in London in 2012 thanks to a series of strong showings, Mexico travelled to Brazil with high expectations of successfully defending their title.

While they did beat Fiji 5-1, they were eliminated from the competition after a 2-2 tie with Germany and a 1-0 loss to South Korea.

But they have come back strong at Tokyo 2020, winning their Group A matches against France and South Africa to go to the quarterfinals.

After a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Brazil in the semi-finals, Rio’s redemption was capped by a nine-goal thriller versus Korea.

However, after getting even with Japan for a loss in the group stage, Jaime Lozano’s squad has finally delivered a gold haul for the tournament.
