In the first half, Mexico took the lead when S. Cordova scored on a penalty, and the America star later assisted on Vasquez’s goal by taking a free kick.
Just before the hour mark, Vega added a third to keep El Tri on track for third place in the tournament.
With 15 minutes remaining, Mitoma gave Japan a glimmer of hope, but it wasn’t enough to save a loss, and the home team was defeated 0-1.
After the disappointment of Rio, El Tri is back on track and ready to win medals.
After winning the gold medal in London in 2012 thanks to a series of strong showings, Mexico travelled to Brazil with high expectations of successfully defending their title.
While they did beat Fiji 5-1, they were eliminated from the competition after a 2-2 tie with Germany and a 1-0 loss to South Korea.
But they have come back strong at Tokyo 2020, winning their Group A matches against France and South Africa to go to the quarterfinals.
After a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Brazil in the semi-finals, Rio’s redemption was capped by a nine-goal thriller versus Korea.
However, after getting even with Japan for a loss in the group stage, Jaime Lozano’s squad has finally delivered a gold haul for the tournament.
