In the Football Ferns’ 2-1 opening loss to Australia on Wednesday night, G. Rennie made her international debut in front of her adoring brother in the fans by scoring with her very first touch of the ball.

The 20-year-old substitute was the lone bright spot in New Zealand’s dismal opening performance at the Tokyo Olympics, scoring a consolation goal in the final minute of regulation time by tipping a header past Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams.
G. Rennie, a product of Canterbury United Pride, was overjoyed to score on her senior debut. Unfortunately, the Football Ferns’ late-game surge ultimately wasn’t enough to threaten Australia’s goal following Rennie’s 91st-minute effort.

First of all, just being able to enter the game was a truly memorable experience for me. “It was a huge deal when I made my debut, and it felt great to score my first goal,” she said.
But, of course, we were still down 2-1, so we quickly realised that we had to go collect the ball and try to score another goal.
I know that this is something I’ll think back on often. That was the only contact I made the entire game, but I’ll take it. This is not a terrible statistic. I’ll take one.
Her brother was also present at Tokyo Stadium to see the goal, which made it all the more meaningful.
