“This is the dream of dreams.” When I moved into my freshman dorm in 2016, I saw a post-it note with the word “Tokyo” written on it.

Typical of Olympic ambitions, this endeavour has taken at least four years. So this is the next step in the realisation of that desire.

With the Tokyo Olympics set for 2020, C. Blevins, a 2016 Durango High School alumnus, was one of two athletes nominated to the long team for potential Olympic selection in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the Games had to be postponed by a year, giving C. Blevins and Utah’s Keegan Swenson an extra year to vie for a spot on the Olympic team.

On Thursday, USA Cycling revealed its 28 long-team finalists. BMX, MTB, and Road/Track cycling are all included. Sepp Kuss, a cyclist from Durango, would have been a strong candidate for the road cycling squad, but he backed out in May, citing the scheduling conflicts between the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta as the reason.

C. Blevins, who has aged another year and moved up from the under-23 ranks to have some competition against the elite guys under his belt, will benefit greatly from the extra year of training the squad has had thanks to the Olympic rescheduling.

The announcement of this squad is a tribute to the team’s “immense commitment and hard work” over many years, notably during “one of the most arduous periods of our life time,” as Jim Miller, USA Cycling’s Chief of Sport Performance, put it in a press release.

We’ve used the extra year to get even stronger and more prepared for the Olympics, and I think we’ve done that. This summer in Tokyo, you’ll see that we’ve brought a team that can win medals across the board.
